Design centred on you

Work with me to create tailored design solutions that will best suit your needs, site and budget.

Your project begins with in-depth analysis of your requirements, your vision and detailed evaluation of your site and it’s potential.

Attentiveness to clients’ requirements, and the physical settings of their projects together form the basis of Dominic’s methodology.  Design begins as a conversation, often sharing ideas with pencil and paper, to capture what is essential and what works.

The design process is three dimensional, from the thumbnail pencil sketch through to 3D digital modelling, and detailed construction documents. Quality design information is provided at every step so that costs can be carefully managed to keep the project within budget.

Widely experienced, practising as a registered architect since 1992, mostly in Christchurch.  Dominic’s projects to date include a number of houses, various other types of buildings and more recently churches.  He founded his own architectural practice in 2014.

Dominic Hassan Architect Ltd formed a partnership with David Smith Architects Ltd in 2017:  Hassan+Smith Architects, combines their complementary skills and experience.

Wanaka Holiday Home

A holiday home where a growing extended family of three generations can relax and reconnect.

A timber house featuring the beautiful grain and texture of cedar and plywood, durable enough for all the whanau, their friends and their pets.

An open plan layout that maximises views and allows sunlight to permeate throughout. Indoor and outdoor living zones are proportioned for small and large gatherings. Wide eaves and deep verandahs offer shelter from the intense Central Otago sun. An under-verandah wood burner burns hot for fireside chats as the evenings get cooler.

A home in tune with its alpine setting, close to the stunning Lake Wanaka. Vertical glazing at the entrance, in the colours of New Zealand’s alpine parrot the Kea, allows coloured light right inside.

The house includes universal design principles for ease of mobility such as level entry, wider doors and passages, step-free showers and an elevator.

The home has been awarded a 3-Star Lifemark rating.

Renovation

MA & Rob Tombs asked Dominic to suggest some internal improvements to their recently purchased house in Wadestown, Wellington.

It’s a 1960’s modern beauty - big timber windows flooding the interior with light and wonderful Wellington views, a simple low-pitched roof and all finished with original 60’s claddings and trim inside and out.

The floor plan was really cellular, with poky little rooms in funny places.  It needed some replanning, and the budget was tight.

We agreed that all those simple 60’s details had plenty of charm, so why update them?

A simple rearrangement of the plan would suffice.  We reused the old doors with the original hardware, and any new trim exactly matched the original profiles.  Walls were taken away to create an open plan and make the most of the view.  The master bedroom got a walk-in robe and an ensuite bathroom.  An alteration in keeping with the character of the house would be best.

Scandinavia provided some inspiration for the new insertions.  The kitchen now has an amazing view and plenty of sunshine.  The white composite stone island bench has a subtle bend and with stainless steel adjoining the cooktop.  Panels are a mix of plywood and shimmering white Melteca Hi-Gloss.  The stairway now features a free form screen in blonde timber, with a secret door to conceal a cupboard.  A large glazed panel now slides across to enclose the separate living room where the new gas fire keeps it cosy.

Matthew Palmer Construction did a fantastic job of the building work.  Matt understood what we were trying to achieve and his finishing work was superb.

Church Architecture

Early concept sketches of new church and pastoral facility for the parish of St Francis of Assisi in Christchurch.  A traditional church arrangement was requested with particular reference to the Franciscan tradition.  The design includes a processional layering of spaces from exterior courtyards and cloistered garden areas into the church narthex, baptismal area, nave and sanctuary. The church would be naturally acoustic and include a fresh air heating and cooling system, with seating for 450 people, and also include Green Star sustainable design features.
